VACAVILLE-

The last of the original iconic three-panel Nut Tree signs in Vacaville was dismantled on Wednesday.

When the property was bought by a developer in 2003, the new owner agreed to save one panel of the sign to be displayed in the Nut Tree shopping center.

City of Vacaville and Solano County leaders reached an additional agreement with the developer between Tuesday and Wednesday to preserve the other two panels.

A second panel will be displayed at the Vacaville Museum, and a third will be put into storage.

The sign was one of three constructed in 1964, designed by Don Birrell. They were made of cement, crushed marble, obsidian, and green glass. The other two were demolished and replaced with smaller signs during the transformation of the Nut Tree into a new retail center.
