SAN FRANCISCO—

The 49ers will have a chance to play a hometown Super Bowl, as the NFL owners have voted for Levi Stadium to host Super Bowl 50.

Team owners made the vote in Boston Tuesday, as a part discussions on other league business.

Levi Stadium, the replacement for Candlestick Park, is expected to be open for the 2014 season.

Super Bowl 50 will be played in 2016. The Bay Area has hosted one Super Bowl in the past – 1985’s Super Bowl 29 at Stanford Stadium, which pitted the 49ers against the Dolphins. Joe Montana and co. emerged 36-16 winners that year.

The new stadium is about 40 miles southeast of old Candlestick Park.
