RANCHO CORDOVA–

Sources have confirmed to FOX40 that the man in the video, busted last night for suspicion of DUI, is former Orange County assembly member Richard Robinson.

“The BMW was driven by Richard Robinson, a 69-year-old male out of Rancho Murrieta,” said Officer Jasper Begay with CHP.

Witnesses at the scene say the obviously altered Robinson didn’t just plow into a truck while allegedly drunk – they say he tried to take off.

We, like the driver and passenger in the Dodge Dakota that Robinson allegedly hit, noticed his license plate.

They’re reserved for Senate and Assembly members – the ‘A’ for Assembly, the number for the district, and the small ‘R’ for “retired.”

Most importantly, they’re not available to the general public. Mike Marando with the DMV confirmed this to FOX40.

“You and I, as non-assembly members, non-senators, we can’t get those plates. To get elected, you have to be a member of the assembly or the senate?” FOX40 asked.

“That’s correct,” Marando said.

CHP says that despite the assertion that Robinson tried to take off, it’s unlikely a hit and run charge will be tacked on.

“We could go a hit and run, but if he didn’t leave the scene, most likely not, it’d probably still be a misdemeanor DUI,” Begay said.

As for Robinson’s alleged blood alcohol level, that’s up in the air, too.

“Did he get a breathalyzer?” FOX40 asked. “No, he did not submit to a breath test. He did take a chemical test, being a blood test,” Begay said.

A blood test which couldn’t be administered until Robinson was booked into the Sacramento County Jail, when whatever booze in his blood stream would have had time to absorb.

FOX40 tried to talk to Robinson at his home in a gated Rancho Murrieta community, and paid a visit to his former lobbying office on L Street, across from the Capitol, but not dice.

Robinson posted bond early Thursday.
