STOCKTON-

Stockton Police released a surveillance video showing four suspects they believe are involved in a homicide.

Jesus “Jesse” Villegas Mendoza, a 23-year-old minister, was shot and killed Tuesday evening, when a stray bullet struck his windshield at East Main Street and Sharon Way in Stockton.

The surveillance video shows several suspects shooting across Main Street and then running from the scene at approximately the same time Mendoza was killed, according to Stockton police.

“It’s just so painful. I don’t even know how to explain it in words,” Pastor Ramon Leal said.

Pastor Leal said he had been mentoring Mendoza since he was 17 years old at Centro Apostolico Vida Nueva Church on Main Street in Stockton. Mendoza was on track to becoming a pastor one day.

“He was sitting right here in the back pew, like always. I’m preaching he’s just like this you know with eyes wide open,  just hearing the message,” he said.

Mendoza leaves behind a young daughter, wife, extended family, and community that loved him.

“We want to figure out who did this, arrest them and start bringing some type of closure to the Mendoza family,” said Joseph Silva with Stockton Police.

Pastor Leal told FOX40 he had already canvassed the neighborhood to speak with possible witnesses. but several of them told him they were afraid to speak out.

“Let us know who it was. Those people are not supposed to be out on the streets. Right now it’s Jesse, later on it could be your family member. We need to stop that,” said Leal.

If you recognize any of the people from the surveillance video, or know anything about the crime, you are asked to contact Stockton Police.
