SACRAMENTO—

Sunday night was the last night of the California State Fair. This year, there was a slight increase in the number of people attending.

Several new attractions, including Sacramento Republic FC, helped bring in a larger crowd this year.

The California State Fair brought in more people this year than last, with the average attendance jumping 10% compared to 2013’s numbers. Each family has their tradition that brings them back each year.

“It’s not State Fair without the Fair food,” said Linda Lee Johnson, a fan of the fair. “I have a 9-year-old who loves the turkey legs and a turkey leg [makes] us happy for the entire day.”

The turkey leg Johnson was describing has become a staple food for the State Fair. “It’s a good meal for people, one person eats one of them and you can eat it comfortably. I wouldn’t say it’s too much,” said Carlos Farias, who sells them at Big Bubba’s Barbecue at the State Fair. Last Saturday Big Bubba’s Barbecue sold around 800 of them. The stand also hired 17 local employees to keep up with the traffic.

The lemonade stands and livestock shows brought in the crowds that they usually do, but this year’s fair also had what others didn’t, Sacramento Republic FC games.

Even one fan, Bill Buckman, said “I probably wouldn’t have come to the State Fair if it hadn’t been for going to the soccer game.”

The heat did push back Sunday’s soccer match from 5:30 to 7 p.m., but fans say they prefer the later start after dusk.
