DAVIS—

A typical picture may say 1,000 words but a pictures with 1,000 bees says even more.

This picture of a ‘bee beard’ was taken at the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility at UC Davis.

The picture, taken by Kathy Keatley Garvey of the UC Davis Department of Entomology and Nematology, captures Jakub Gabka of Poland, a visiting bee scientist.

The Bee Research Facility decided to host a bee beard competition — because apparently UC Davis Bee Researchers put bees on their faces for fun — and the quick snap of the researcher wounded up earning Garvey a photography award. The picture won the Top Feature Award from the international Association for Communication Excellence (ACE).
