FORESTHILL-

A runner, missing in rugged terrain for two nights, surviving freezing overnight temperatures, was all smiles as he was brought back down to base camp, to waiting friends, family and searchers.

“I’m grateful. Thank you very much,” Root said as he was loaded into an ambulance.

Root was found Tuesday afternoon in the Michigan Bluff trail area, near Foresthill in Placer County.

He was last seen Sunday morning when he met up with a running group to do a training run.

Placer County Sheriff’s deputies began their search Sunday night, but an incoming storm meant crews had to change their approach and tactics on Monday to battle the cold and snow.

Tuesday afternoon, deputies say they got word one of the search crews found a person, and they identified themselves as Robert Root.

He was slowly brought down the trail, and seemed in good spirits as he talked with the waiting media and was loaded into an ambulance.

There are no details at this time about what injuries Root may have, or what condition he is in. He was talking and smiling as he was taken away.
